The Campaign

HAM Happens: So Let's Talk About It! is a youth led campaign to raise awareness and generate public discussion about the inadequate and regressive state of sexual health education in the Manitoba school system today.

“HAM” is an acronym and the informal moniker students and teachers have given to a policy at the River-East Transcona School Division that delimits how and when teachers delivering the Manitoba health curriculum are allowed to discuss topics of Homosexuality (sexual orientation), Abortion, and Masturbation.

The impetus to organize and draw attention to this issue comes directly from youth in the River-East Transcona School Division who have experienced the policy first hand, as well as students, teachers, and concerned citizens in other school divisions who know of the policy and have concerns about its homophobic and sexist (not to mention censorial) implications.
